The river: Dashashwamedh and the ghats

The Dashashwamedh Ganga aarti runs daily, starting just after sunset and lasting about 45 minutes (district portal). The Varanasi Smart City authority counts 88 ghats; the traditional count is 84 — we show both. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are the two exclusively cremation ghats, a fact worth knowing before you point a camera anywhere near them. The ghats guide walks the river front by cluster.

The night the city lights up
