Varanasi’s riverfront is a stairway city — the Varanasi Smart City authority lists 88 ghats, tradition counts 84, and both numbers travel together for a reason: one is administrative, the other sacred. Between them sit the city’s whole public life — prayers, laundry, wrestling, weddings, and at exactly two ghats, cremation.
This guide maps the front by clusters and the etiquette that matters. Checked 01 October 2026.

The clusters, south to north
| Cluster | Anchor ghats | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Assi end | Assi Ghat (southernmost) | Suburban calm; morning yoga/boat starts |
| Central (aarti belt) | Dashashwamedh, Rajendra Prasad, Dashashwamedh–Prayag belt | The aarti, the crowds, the hotels |
| Old city | Manikarnika, Scindia, Panchganga | Living pilgrim heart; Manikarnika = cremation ghat |
| Northern | Harishchandra (cremation), Kedar, Raj Ghat | Thinner crowds, Haridwar-ferry vibes |
Key ghats on record: Dashashwamedh (the evening aarti), Assi (southernmost), Panchganga (the five-streams tradition), and the two exclusively-cremation ghats — Manikarnika and Harishchandra (reported).
Etiquette that is not optional
- No photography at Manikarnika or Harishchandra. None. Mourners and families deserve the dignity you’d want.
- Don’t wander into cremation zones as sightseeing — approach only if attending, with a guide or host.
- Feet out of the water photos, saris aren’t costumes — the ghats are homes and shrines, not a film set.
- Boats beat the crowd, and the boat guide covers the sunrise hour.
Walking it
A slow south-to-north walk (Assi → Dashashwamedh → Manikarnika outlook) takes a half-day with breaks; the lanes pull you inland constantly, which is the point. Return by boat at sunset. Elders: the cluster walk halves at Dashashwamedh — senior guide’s geometry.
