Dev Deepawali — the night every ghat of Kashi burns with diyas — falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the Kartik Purnima full moon (tithi from 11:42 PM on 23 November to 8:23 PM on 24 November, per Drik Panchang).

The honest planning picture: the date is fixed by the panchang, but the operational rules come from government announcements that land in November. The 2025 edition gives the working model — a no-fly zone over the ghats, drone restrictions, outside boats barred from the main stretch, life jackets mandatory, boats loaded below capacity. Checked 01 October 2026.

What the festival actually is

On Kartik Purnima, diyas line the full riverfront after dark, the Dashashwamedh aarti is mirrored by smaller aartis down the ghats, and the crowd runs into the lakhs. Pilgrims take the Kartik snan at dawn; the evening belongs to the ghats. It is simultaneously the year’s most beautiful night in Kashi and its most logistically demanding.

The planning that matters

  1. Stays: book by early November, not November week. Riverside rooms sell out first; Godowlia-side stays walk to the ghats. Our stay guide’s tiers map to it.
  2. Boats: only authorised operators, only with life jackets. The 2025 rules barred outside boats and loaded vessels below capacity — expect the same; no rule-chasing with unlicensed boatmen.
  3. Arrive a day early. Roads constrict around the ghats on the day; an 23 November arrival beats a 24 November gamble.
  4. Elders: fixed vantage, no drift. Pick one ghat, hold it, exit before the crush (senior guide pacing).
  5. Phones: charged and labelled. Crowds separate groups; the no-fly/drone rules mean your drone stays home.

The pairing play

Deepotsav in Ayodhya runs 7 November 2026 — seventeen days before Dev Deepawali. Pilgrims with a longer window do both on one North India run; the circuit plan connects them, and the Yatra Alerts list pings both windows’ booking-open moments.

The checklist

The Dev Deepawali PDF checklist (with the Yatra Alerts signup) covers: stay booking deadline, boat operator vetting, snan timing, ghat vantage plan, elder/child logistics, exit strategy, and what to carry for a night on the steps in late-November chill.
