The Vishwanath Corridor — the ceremonial passage inaugurated on 13 December 2021 to link Kashi Vishwanath temple toward the Ganga — is now the way most pilgrims meet the temple.

News coverage of the project put it around 400 m long and roughly 50 ft wide, with multiple entry gates and the river-facing Ganga Dwar on the Lalita Ghat side. Those dimensions come from news/guide coverage rather than a fetched official page, so they’re labelled reported. Checked 01 October 2026.

The two approaches

Approach Serves Notes
Godowlia / Gate-4 side (road) Arrivals by auto/cab from Cantt or the city Reported free locker/cloakroom points nearby; last vehicle drop at Godowlia Crossing
Ganga Dwar (river) Boat arrivals and walkers along the ghats River-facing gate on the Lalita Ghat end

Your queue or ticket names the gate — the darshan guide’s rules apply identically from either side: no electronics, no bags, no leather.

Walking it well

  • Dawn is the corridor’s best hour — before the queues, the stone glows and the Ganga side opens to the river. Boat-and-temple mornings (see the boat guide) use exactly this axis: alight near Manikarnika/Lalita, walk the corridor, darshan, breakfast after.
  • The rediscovered temples line the passage — the project’s reporting describes dozens of old temple remains restored along the route; they’re worth the slow walk out even if you don’t pause on the way in.
  • Footwear and phones go into deposit before the gates — the reported locker points cluster on the Gate-4 side.
  • Elders: guide coverage mentions wheelchair and golf-cart assistance on the corridor, but we couldn’t confirm it on an official page — the senior guide carries the full accessibility picture and the helpdesk numbers to verify with.

What the corridor changed

Beyond convenience, the corridor reorganised the whole pilgrimage: the temple now faces the river, boat itineraries end (or begin) at the Ganga Dwar, and the Godowlia side has become the de-facto transport hub. ~45,000 pilgrims a day averaged through in 2023 per government-cited reporting — the crowd systems exist because of that number.
