The classic yatra runs west to east — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — a 10–12 day arc from Haridwar or Rishikesh through four valleys and two treks. The plan below uses reported route figures; the hills themselves add the real variable, which is why every good plan carries weather buffers. Checked 01 October 2026.

The leg table
| Leg | Distance (reported) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Haridwar → Barkot | ~220 km | The long approach; Mussoorie ridge |
| Barkot → Janki Chatti → Yamunotri trek | ~36 km drive + ~6 km trek | Trek day 1 |
| Barkot → Uttarkashi | ~100 km | Valley drive |
| Uttarkashi → Gangotri → back | ~100 km each way | Road-head darshan |
| Uttarkashi → Guptkashi | ~220–230 km | The long transfer day |
| Guptkashi → Gaurikund → Kedarnath trek | ~30 km drive + ~16 km trek | Trek day 2 |
| Descend → Sitapur/Guptkashi | — | Recovery night |
| Guptkashi → Joshimath | ~220 km class | Chamoli valleys |
| Joshimath → Badrinath → back | ~48 km each way | Road-head darshan |
| Joshimath → Rishikesh/Haridwar | ~290–300 km | The long return |
Reported figures; night driving is banned 8 PM–4 AM — plan arrivals before dark.
Where the buffers go
- After each trek — a recovery night is not optional at this altitude.
- Before Kedarnath — its weather window is the strictest; weather suspensions happen (2026 saw a two-day pause).
- The last leg — landslides on the return corridor are the season’s routine.
A tight 10-day plan is possible; an 11–12 day plan is wise. Do-Dham travellers compress this to 5–7 days; helicopter users compress differently (and pay for it).
Booking sequence
Registration opens ~1–2 months pre-season (2026 pattern) → kapat dates announce Feb–Apr → IRCTC heli windows (if flying) → stays (GMVN lists into 2027) → transport. The budget calculator and stays guide take it from there.
