Himalayan packing is systems, not items: a layering system for day-night swings that can run 25 °C to near zero at the dhams, a medicine kit built with your doctor (the health protocol makes this practical, not optional), and documents led by the QR-coded Yatra Registration Letter. Checked 01 October 2026.

Layer 1 — clothing system
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Base layers ×2 (thermal in shoulder seasons) | Mornings at the dhams run cold |
| Fleece/midlayer + windproof shell | The summit kombos: wind, not just cold |
| Rain shell + pack cover | Every season; monsoon = non-negotiable |
| Trek shoes with grip + spare socks | Wet feet end yatras |
| Woolen cap + gloves | Dawn darshans and descents |
| Modest temple wear | Darshan-appropriate at every dham |
Layer 2 — the medicine kit (build with your doctor)
- Personal prescriptions in original packaging (plus a copy of the prescription).
- ORS/electrolyte sachets; paracetamol-class basics; blister care.
- Any altitude-specific medication only if your doctor prescribes it — we don’t list prescription altitude drugs, because that’s between you and your doctor.
- Helpline 104 knowledge; the altitude-health guide carries the protocol context.
Layer 3 — documents and the small stuff
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Yatra Registration Letter (printed + offline copy) | QR verification at checkpoints — official |
| ID cards matching registration | Consistency at checks |
| Cash in small notes | Halt towns run cash-first |
| Power bank + torch | Halt-town outages are routine |
| Refillable bottle + purification tablets | Plastic discipline on the trails |
| Trek pole (or a good stick) | The descents thank you |
Season variants
- May–June: lighter layers, sun protection, dust.
- Monsoon: double rain kit, extra socks, leech patience.
- September–October: winter kit early; the closing weeks see snow return.

Frequently asked questions
What’s the one thing people forget?
The printed registration letter — checkpoints and dead zones coexist.
Do I need trek gear for all four dhams?
Only two involve treks (Yamunotri ~6 km, Kedarnath ~16 km); Gangotri and Badrinath are road-heads. Pack for the two.
